Life Story

Micheál Fahey — Mick to everyone who knew him — was born in Gort, County Galway in the spring of 1933, the third of six children, and he lived within ten miles of that spot for the whole of his ninety-one years.

He left school at fourteen and was apprenticed to a carpenter in Loughrea, which set the shape of his working life. For more than fifty years he made and mended: roof timbers, kitchen dressers, and the altar rails in two parish churches that are still standing. He had no patience for work done in a hurry and no interest in being praised for work done well.
